Amazing
Maritimes Experience
We

.
Amist
the numbers of corporate
travelers commuting
to their places of
work, perhaps only
a city or two away,
sauntered our motley
crew while venturing eastward on
our Maritimes family vacation.
Nathalie
was busy riffling through
her bag making sure we remembered
the train tickets, I was on a cell
with my neighbour confirming all
last minute arrangements in our
absence, such as mail and garbage
pick up. Josh and Jonah were horsing
around with each other and Jordan
was wandering slightly behind wide-eyed
at the artistic designs on the ceilings
towering above of the huge train
station. It was no wonder we made
it to the train at all.

Well,
we finally did make it onto the train and climbed
aboard. Shortly after, an unusual experience occurred.
As the train continued on its journey forward,
the chaos we brought aboard just stopped. Nathalie
and I recall glancing at each other in amazement
at the seemingly calming effect the moving train
had on the kids. We had envisioned a long nightmarish
journey constantly trying to keep the kids from
driving the other passengers crazy, not to mention
the staff. It did not take us long to realize
that VIA Rail’s skilled customer focus and
sensitivity to the needs of a traveling family
allowed us all to sit back, enjoy the view and
each other. It seems reasonable to conclude that
the needs of a family traveling with children
are likely poles apart than those of VIA Rail’s
average corporate customer. However, rather than
put up with us, they were understanding and accommodating
to our needs. This made the journey more bearable
and one that we would take again.

The
Ocean is a night train that
runs six times a week (six times
each way) between Montréal
and Halifax. You will cover hundreds
of kilo-metres while sleeping soundly
and you'll wake up in a completely
different part of Canada!
The
Ocean leaves Montréal in the
evening and travels through the small
villages on the south
shore of the St. Lawrence River before
entering the Matapédia Valley.
By very early morning, you'll see Chaleur
Bay. From there, the Ocean heads south
across New Brunswick, where
it stops in Moncton before noon, and then
continues on to Nova Scotia to arrive
at Halifax around mid-afternoon. In the
other direction, the Ocean leaves Halifax
in the afternoon to reach Montréal
the next morning.
The
Ocean is the ideal choice for visiting
Québec and the Atlantic region.
It's also very handy for short journeys
in Nova Scotia and in New Brunswick.
